house on a hill
The proposal House on a Hill gathers inspiration from the surrounding historical, architectural icons and landscapes. Through research of the site and its existing as well as traditional cultural environment, particular local qualities and motifs are interpreted and integrated into this new addition.
The overall conceptual organisation of the upper floor plans and facades of the museum echoes the Norwegian tun, which is a traditional type of clustered settlement. The intention is to reduce the apparent scale of the relatively large footprint of the building and to create varied and defined interior spaces gathered around a common area.
The historic architecture of the site is mainly made of heavy masonry, and this constructive principle and materiality is applied to the lower floors of the museum consisting of rough-hewn limestone interior walls. The vertical space and the column structure of the nearby cathedral has been an inspiration for the two-story-high central distribution spaces.
The museum is partially lowered in the hill which minimizes its impact on sightlines and evens out the size ratio to surrounding buildings while creating varying lighting conditions and atmospheres in the interior.

Forslaget Bakkehuset tager inspiration i de historiske, arkitektoniske ikoner i området. På baggrund af analyser af stedets eksisterende og forhenværende arkitektur, bliver særlige kvaliteter og motiver integreret og fortolket i nye rammer.
Det firlængede tun, som udgør en samling af mindre huse, er som organisering overført til museumsbygningens øverste grundplaner og facader, som nedbryder skalaen af det store byggeri og skaber varierende og afgrænsede rumligheder indvendigt.
Den forhenværende Bispeborg rummer en historisk arkitektur bestående af murværk af natursten, og denne materialitet overføres til museets nederste etage som er beklædt i grove, tilhuggede kalkstensflader. Domkirkeruinernes søjlestruktur og vertikale rum har været en inspiration for bygningens to dobbelthøje fordelingsrum.
Museet er placeret delvist nede i bakken og bliver således en del af grundens særlige, landskabelige formation. Dette greb minimerer museets indvirkning på sigtelinjer og udligner størrelsesforholdet til områdets øvrige byggeri, samtidig med at der skabes varierende lysforhold og stemning i museets indre.
